As first reported by Adam Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals have parted ways with star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. It was previously reported that the Cardinals were trying to trade Hopkins since his cap hit for 2023 was $30.75 million. By cutting Hopkins, the Cardinals saved $8.15 million in the 2023 season but are taking a dead cap hit of 22.6 million, meaning they lost that money. With this news, it is time to look at Hopkins future on what team he could land on this season.
As seen in the above tweet Hopkins stated recently that he would like to play with five teams, the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Los Angeles Chargers. Of the five teams, the most likely destinations for Hopkins are Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Buffalo. The Chargers and Ravens do not need wide receivers, thanks to the draft and free agency.
Of the three remaining teams on the list, Kansas City is the most likely spot for Hopkins to land. Even though the Chiefs are coming off of a Super Bowl Victory in which the team did not possess a star wide receiver, adding a star wideout to their team may not be greatly needed, but it would help. Signing with the Cheifs gives Hopkins the best Chance of winning a Super Bowl ring which would be another notch in his Legacy, cementing him as a first-ballot Hall Of Famer. The only thing the Cheifs have going against them is only having $3.8 million in cap space.
The second most likely team for Hopkins to land on is the Bills. While the Bills only have $4.3 million in cap space, if they could sign Hopkins, it would give them three solid wide receivers. Even though they already bolster a dangerous receiving core with Stefon Diggs and Gsabe Davis, adding Hopkins would give them two-star wide receivers. Adding Hopkins would make the Bills instant Super Bowl favorites again.
The last team on the list of places Hopkins would like to play for is the Philadelphia Eagles, who have the most cap space on this list at $14.3 million. The Eagles certainly do not need Hoipklins like the Bills and Chiefs do since their top two receivers just had 1000-yard seasons. However, if they signed Hopkins, they would undoubtedly have the best-receiving core in the league. The Eagles would be the most surefire route for Hopkins to make it to the Super Bowl since they were there last season, and they are still the best team in the NFC, whereas the AFC is packed with great teams.
Another team Hopkins has the potential of landing on is the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars currently have $11.05 million in cap space. The Jaguars have the most work to do to become a complete team on this list. However, adding Hopkins to a team that was the tenth-best at passing last season will offset some of the issues they face elsewhere due to how much more they will score. Signing Hopkins would not be out of the ordinary for the Jaguars since, in the 2022 off-season, the Jaguars spent big money on wide receiver additions.
While, in my opinion, these are the four most likely teams Hopkins will land on, that does not mean he will not sign somewhere else. Stay tuned to the blog and my social media for the update when Hopkins gets signed.
